Singapore’s government has rolled out major updates to parental leave and MediSave usage in 2025, designed to support working families and improve healthcare flexibility. These reforms are part of broader efforts to boost the country’s birth rate and reduce out-of-pocket expenses for medical care. The new initiatives are expected to benefit thousands of Singaporeans but who really qualifies?
More Leave for New Parents
From 1 January 2025, paternity leave has been doubled to four weeks, fully government-paid. In addition, unmarried mothers now receive equal parental leave benefits, marking a progressive step towards inclusivity. Working mothers will also enjoy enhanced maternity leave flexibility, giving families more breathing room to manage childcare and work commitments during the early months.
MediSave Gets a Flexible Upgrade

Alongside leave reforms, Singapore has expanded the MediSave Flexi-use scheme. Seniors aged 60 and above can now use up to $500 per year from their MediSave for outpatient treatments at approved private and public clinics. Previously limited to public settings, this new option givesseniors greater control over where and how they manage their healthcare.
Who Is Eligible?
The new leave benefits apply to working parents with Singaporean children born on or after 1 January 2025. Employers are required to adhere to the revised provisions, and employees should ensure their HR departments update them on eligibility criteria. As for the MediSave Flexi-use, eligibility is automatic for all citizens aged 60 and above, provided they have sufficient funds in their account.
Why This Matters for Families
These 2025 updates reflect the government’s proactive stance on work-life balance and eldercare. By easing the financial burden on new parents and offering more healthcare options to seniors, Singapore is paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive social environment. Families stand to gain both immediate and long-term benefits.
